Good Bye

So some of you may already know this, and some may have no idea. I am leaving Kool 101.3. This will be my last week on air with my last show being Thursday March 31st. It was a very tough choice as I am leaving radio as well. I will be working for an Oilfield company that I have had experience with in the past. We are moving back to our home town of Kindersley Saskatchewan. The Lakeland will always have a very special place in my heart and I have loved being up here. I will always be a Pontiacs fan and plan on visiting as much as possible. For all those who have listened and enjoyed what I have done over the last 2+years I thank you. And for all those who haven't enjoyed what I have done for the last 2+ years, I'm sorry about your lack of humour. That's it that's all

Spring time

So I know it has been a month since my last blog entry. I am always being told that if I have a blog, I need to care about it and make sure its up to date. If I don't care about it, then the listener isn't going to care to read it. But to be honest, on this side of the mic in my personal life, it has been a month from hell. I'm not going to get into whats going on but I just haven't had the motivation to blog for a while.

So now that that's off my chest a few things that have been bugging me.

The NHL.
When are they going to start realizing that trying to grow the game and gain new fans is also pushing away the people who love the sport. Why is there empty rinks in Phoenix? Because people there don't care about hockey. There are 2 cities (WPG, QUE) in the greatest hockey nation on earth that are begging for NHL and for reasons I cannot understand the NHL says no we need to lose millions in PHX every year.

Rules. it is beginning to be impossible to figure out what is "clean" and what is "illegal" in the NHL. hitting a guy away from the puck into the boards is worth 10 games but pile driving a guy into the turnbuckle isn't even a fine. When a government is broken, there is an election and new people are brought in to run the country. The NHL brass has been broken for years and I think its time some new people were brought in to get it back to how it is. Rod Pedersen always says hockey is broken and I'm starting to agree with him.

I'm convinced when my 2 year starts playing at the Junior level, the game will be un-enjoyable to watch. I guess I will have to start teaching him a nasty changeup this spring.

Thats it thats all

Super Bowl XLV

OK I know, I'm a week and a half late on a blog post regarding the Super Bowl, but hey, its OK. I don't mind.

This is my family on Super Bowl Sunday in Cancun

For the first time in my life I was able to watch the Superbowl with people who cared who won. We were in Cancun and the Collage (lobby bar) held a party. In front of us were Steelers fans. Like hardcore Steelers fans. All decked out in yellow and had terrible towels and the whole nine yards. (get it? 9 yards, short of a 1st down like the Steelers were all night).

So, seeing as I have no team I cheered for Green Bay. I had a guy swear at me because I cheered for a touchdown. Then he walked up to me. And this guy was a dweeb. Shorter than me, narrow shoulders, dweeb hair cut, socks and shorts on. Just a loser. So when he was walking up to me I figured it was on like donkey kong and I had to slap him silly. When he reached me he apologized for being a poor sport and didn't mean it. Oh well, maybe next Cancun Super Bowl Party I can slap him around.

So being a Packers fan for the night, my brother and I participated in a beer chugging contest against other Steelers fans. 2 Canadians, and 6 Yankees. We showed them what we were all about and downed the beers in about 2 seconds each. Darn Yankee doodles on our teams sipped and it literally took the guy 1 minute to drink his and we lost. But did we really? NOPE! Any time you are in a beer chugging contest, you are a winner!

Anyways, we ended up taking shots of Tequila for every touchdown scored in the game and the rest of the night is a bit fuzzy.

That's it that's all

Chicken Fights part 2

So as a few of you who read this more often know, before leaving for Mexico, my brother asked about seeing some "chicken fights". But not girls wrestling on shoulders, he meant cock fights. I giggled. I also said hell no, way to sketchy to go see cock fights.

Well he does his own thing and ended up involved in a "chicken fight".

As you can see when it was all said and done, they made and even added each other as facebook friends.

That's it, that's all.

Debriefing

So I am back and into the swing of things from my Mexican holiday.

The entire week I was gone I vowed to stay away from Facebook, twitter, email, texting, and anything else to keep up to date on what was going on. It was absolutely amazing. It made me have real conversations with people. I wasn't looking down at my phone at all and i loved it. Plus I watched very little tv and I cant even begin to tell you how recharged that can make a person. I swam in the ocean everyday but 2 (jellyfish one day, and thunderstorms one day), I mini golfed, snorkeled, and realized in the sun.

The resort we stayed at was called Crown Paradise. In my opinion it was fanfrickentastic, but I'm not hard to please. It was very much a kid friendly resort and that's why we choose it. Seth had a daycare. Now people were telling us before we went that there is no way in hell they would let their kids stay in a Mexican day care, but only 4 kids went missing the entire week we were there so I would say it was pretty well ran. (that was sarcasm, there is no way a resort would be able to operate a day care if there were ANY kinds of issues. It was no different than staying in a day care in Canada)

I would also highly recommend Cancun. Great place with alot to do. It is very commercialized so if a 3rd world country hot holiday isn't something you would like, go to Cancun. You can hit up Wal-Mart, Mcdonalds, Dominos, and basically every chain restaurant and store here in Canada.

So now I have a Caribbean travel bug, if anyone wants to take me on a trip to the tropics, feel free to let me know.

Ok that's it that's all.

Back on air next Friday!

Friday

I had my last Boxing session for a while last night. I head Cancun Wednesday morning. Flight leaves at 6 am so we have to be at the Airport at 3. I am already there mentally, basically have things on cruise control. The people at boxing were saying that I will come back out of shape. Not going to happen. My wife happens to be a personal trainer and there is a world class gym at the resort we are staying at so I will be continuing my training to make my hands a weapon.

If someone with a bob cat could clear the parking lot at Muller Plaza that would be great. With the + temps we had, the ice pack that was our parking lot has become 9 inches of mush. And for whatever reason the owner doesn't think that clearing it is something that needs to be done, even when cars are getting stuck and people cant walk through it. I get that it would cost, but hes a lawyer.

Suicide

Its such a touchy and tricky subject. I don't even like to say the word. In the last 72 hours people very close to me have been devastated by the news of 2 young men who decided there was nothing left. I didn't know these guys personally but can feel the pain. One was a guy who my brother would hang out with from time to time and one was a cousin of my wife.

It brings up so many emotions. Sadness. Anger. Confusion. Guilt. My heart aches for the people who were close to them. I'm angry that they decided to hurt those who loved them. I'm confused as to why they decided that is all they had left. I feel guilty that I couldn't help.

I have had to deal with suicide since I was 5 years old. My uncle Miles decided that was his only way out. Its not.

I know life is tough. I have felt some extreme lows. But there is always someone there who will listen. There is always someone there who loves you. There is always something to live for.

Like I said, I didn't know these 2 guys. They didn't know each other. 2 guys who felt there was no other answer.

If these are things that cross your mind, talk to someone.

1 800 448 3000. That's a national hot line number. They can help.

Monday

Watched some pretty good stuff on TV yesterday. Jurassic Park was on so Seth (22 months old) and I sat down and watched it. He lost his marbles when the T-Rex attacks the cars after escaping its pen. Like literally screamed, cried and ran out of the room. I had to pick him up and he locked onto my like a little squid. his little arms and legs wrapped all the way around me I swear.

I was able to calm him down and then taught him how to hide under a blanket during scary spots. He rather enjoyed doing that and even did it at appropriate times during the movie and then later that night during Oilers power plays.

Can we seriously start cleaning up facebook. Its making us as a society look dumb. If you don't know how to spell something look it up. You're already on the Internet. Some peoples entire statuses seem to be in a code that I can't figure out. It doesn't make you cool, it makes you dumb.

Speaking of FB, I cruise through it all the time to see whats important to you, the listener. Its helpful on deciding what people care about, and I noticed the ONLY people tweeting and facebooking about the Golden Globes last night, were radio people. I personally don't care about the awards shows and it looks like you don't either. I like knowing who won, as it will affect what movies I rent but the show itself, in my opinion, is a huge waste of time. I was busy with Simpsons, Bobs Burgers, Family Guy, and the Oilers game last night.

That's it, that's all

Just a quickie

How long is a person supposed to hang on to cards for? I have a few birthday and Christmas cards on my desk and I think its time to throw them away but I don't want to offend the people who bought them for me. OR, am I supposed to keep them forever? Maybe I will just do that, or at least until the cleaning lady tosses them for me.

I have a confession. Chad Mercier, head coach and gm of the Pontiacs, was in today for Behind the Bench. He asked if I had taken my Christmas Tree down. I knew he would make fun of me if I answered honestly so I lied and said yes. Then when Robb piped up that he still hasn't taken theirs down yet, I joined Chad and made fun of Robb.

Like Robb said though, they do make great lamps!

That's it that's all!

Thursday

We discussed nick names on the more morning show today. I wish I had a really cool nickname. I came up with a really cool nickname, but that's illegal and it wont be able to be used, but if for some reason we COULD make up our own, I would be Dean "The Jet" Lee!!!

My grandpa calls me Tiger, (started before Tiger Woods was famous) but he's the only one.

Oatmeal is the most underrated breakfast food on the market.

What mode of transportation do I remind you of? Think that's a weird question? It came up in a game of "What" over the weekend and 2 people came up with a broken elevator......weird in so many ways.
Good Job to the Kindersley Red Lions of the Sask West Hockey League. About 5 years the Senior hockey team began. I played for the first 2 years and we were absolutely awful. I think we had 2 wins in those 2 seasons. Most nights dressed only 12 players or so, most of which were under the age of 19, and most nights were filled with brawls and extra curricular activities.
But after a few hard, long ,depressing seasons they have become a respectable hockey team in that league and this year can threaten for a league title! Good job guys!

That's it, that's all!

Ted Williams

How does Ted Williams have a twitter account already? From what I understand he doesn't actually have a place to live yet. Is he going into Internet cafes and tweeting? Something doesn't add up here. There is no way someone made one and its not actually him, now is there?

If he has a "golden" radio voice, mine must be more like a "graphite" radio voice.

Thanks Dr Phil for shining a light on the dark side of him. Not only was he homeless but he has 9 children and an ex-wife who he ran out on in the 80's and hasn't paid any sort of child support. He has only been homeless for the last 15 years so do the math and see how much of a deadbeat he was before hitting rock bottom.

Speaking of his kids, cops were called to his hotel room Monday night due to a "domestic disturbance" . He and his daughter were taken "downtown" and released after they calmed down and it was discovered there was no physical harm done to anyone. They were just having a heated argument. It could have been anything, but my guess it was over the classic debate, spoon or fork for your KD!

Does he have a Russian dentist?

Has anyone ever asked the guy who currently does the Cleveland Cavaliers announcing if hes cool with the job offer to Ted for HIS job??

People are inspired by this story. The key to success and fame is, according to Ted, get into radio, get married, have 9 children, leave your wife and kids for another woman, become an alcoholic, get into drugs, become homeless, beg cheat steal for 15 years, get 'clean' and then get discovered. Boom!! its that easy kids!!!

That's it that's all.

Chicken fights

Got Call of Duty:Black Ops for my birthday!!! I always play the campaign mode before going online, but i must say, the missions are pretty lame. There is WAY to much watching animations and not enough killing bad guys. I just landed in Vietnam so it should get interesting. Hopefully I'm in Forrest Gump and Bubbas platoon.

3 weeks and I am off to Cancun with family. My dad, 2 brothers and I were planning on hitting up some Bullfighting (totally hoping to see some matador get demolished by a bull) but have found out they don't have any this year. Upon telling my youngest brother of this (17) he then suggests, in his own words, "chicken fighting"! Frick did I laugh. for whatever reason calling it "chicken fighting" makes it seem OK to attend. First of all, I don't even know if its legal in Mexico, and second of all, all i can picture with cock fights is a sketchy-back alley-underground-people making bets-people getting killed-something from a James Bond movie-situation. Kind of like this.

See! Sketchy!!!

Then I thought, well maybe he means chicken fights as in the girls-on-top-of-shoulders-wrestling-in-a-pool. Which should be safer.

Something tells me this is NOT what he meant, and that makes me sad.

That's it, that's all. See ya tomorrow

Game Cancelled

The Pontiacs game tonight in Sherwood Park has been cancelled because of weather. So no broadcast tonight, but I did hand pick the music to fill the 3 hours that would normally occupy the evening on game night.

I bet the Crusaders are all pumped that they don't have to feel the wrath of the Yaks. Kevin Carthy has a great status on facebook, "deeply concerned for the kids of sherwood park who were expecting a show tonight" The wrecking ball will be grounded until at least Wednesday when the Pontiacs make the trip to the Park again. Now word on when tonight's game will be re-scheduled, but it sounds like it will be in February.

I'm more disappointed on missing out on a chance to see if my source regarding "puck bunnies" is accurate. oh well.

Speaking of which, I was talking with a friend last night who also referred to "puck bunnies" as just "pucks" while growing up. They also had a special "regional" term for them while growing up, "Tiger Tails" as he grew up in Medicine Hat.

How soon is too soon to teach Seth (23 months old) how to shovel the sidewalk? Should we start with taking out the garbage first? He already likes to help with dishes so I figure we get him trained up as soon as we can.

OK that's all, I should go home. Talk to you later!

Friday

Well this week went by fast. I guess it helps when you only have a 3 day work week.

I will be hitting the road with the Pontiacs tomorrow afternoon. I will be doing colour commentary for the game in Sherwood Park. Robb and I will be on the air at 6:45.

Sherwood Park by the way, hottest puck bunnies in the league. This is from a very reliable un-named source so if you are into good looking ladies, maybe make the trip.

Speaking of 'puck bunnies'. Is that the politically correct term now? I remember back when I was younger we just referred to the as 'pucks'. Is the 'bunny' part an Alberta thing? Or is it to make them feel better with the Playboy Bunny comparison? Do puck bunnies even know they are puck bunnies? Either way, try and tune into tomorrow for the hockey game.
I googled "puck bunnies" and the following picture was one of the few I felt was sharable...the rest were awesome though!

That's it. Have a good weekend!

Silver?

Well that sucked. 3 goal lead vanishes in the 3rd and lose 5-3. how? why? I almost threw up!

How classless are the Russians? You win so you have the right to celebrate, scream scary Russian at the camera with your crooked teeth and ugly faces, sure. You won, I get it. Its not their fault that everything about them is ugly. But, when you take the championship trophy into Canada's end of the ice to celebrate, that's crossing the line. I was disgusted!!! How come Kassian didn't fix some Russian teeth with his Koho? It shoulda been lights out Piestany style! The Brawl in Buffalo!!! Had I been on that team it woulda been ugly. Uglier than their language, teeth and faces combined.

oh well, at least my 2 year old son enjoyed all the goals in the 3rd period. Sometimes I wish I could just appreciate good hockey like him. Doesn't matter who scores he goes bonkers cheering. Definitely lightens the mood.

OK enough World Juniors, I'm getting all fired up!

When you see someone running across the street, do you secretly hope they bite it when they get to the curb? no? me neither.....

Day 2 of boxing tonight! I'm looking forward to punching the crap out of the heavy bag, and I think some people will be sparring so that will be fun to watch. My goal is to start sparring in 3 months, hopefully I learn to keep my hands up or my name will be Dean "lights out" Lee.

Is Eminem the greatest rapper of all time? I think so. People will argue Tupac, but Eminem has been able to stay alive so therefore takes over the title. That is of course if Tupac is actually dead.

alright that's all, talk to you tomorrow

World Juniors

I'm sitting at home watching the Bronze Medal game at the World Juniors featuring the hosts. USA and Sweden. I must say that this is an utter failure for USA. They were the defending champs with 8 returning players playing at home (kinda). if this was being played in Canada and we were playing in the Bronze medal game, on a Wednesday afternoon, there would be outrage. Those poor kids would never hear the end of it. I hope Sweden crushes them by the way.

How embarrassing is USA Hockey. They host the WJHC and when Canada met USA in the semis it looked like it was Canada. Try and sell the game a bit. Its not even like Buffalo isn't a hockey city. They should be ashamed by the lack of support. Just another reason why we are the greatest hockey nation in the world.

The IIHF would be CRAZY if they leave North America for this tournament. I just cant see any other country try and compete with the attendance and TV numbers when its in Canada. 4 million people watched the game against the US. Highest ever for a non-gold medal game, and TSNs highest rated program EVER was the Gold Medal game last year in Saskatoon Can vs USA, with 5.3 million viewers. Would it be that high in Europe with the time difference? Not a chance.

1-0 Sweden. 7:38 to go in 2nd

You ever look at something and think, hey that's easier than it looks??? Boxing is complete opposite!!! I joined the K.A. Boxing club last night, boxing looks tough and is tougher to do.

Damn, US tied it up 6:28 left in 2nd.

How does a person get more twitter followers? I only have 10! its brutal. Recommend me and follow me here Dean_on_Kool

OK time for me to get focused on the big game....later!
